The Seeds of Freedom: Why Do You Really Want What You Want?
We all have things we say we want—more money, more success, more recognition. But beneath those desires lies something deeper, something more fundamental.
Take money, for example. Many people—whether they openly admit it or not—want more of it. And when asked why, a common answer is: freedom.
Freedom of time.
Freedom to do what you love.
Freedom to not have to do what you don’t want.
And yet, despite this desire for freedom, most people sacrifice their freedom daily in order to get money, in the belief it will lead to more freedom at some point in the future.
So what’s the real equation here?
Is it about sacrificing current freedom for future freedom?
But is that how the growth of anything actually works?
What Nature Teaches Us About Growth
In nature, nothing grows by force or sacrifice alone. The path to abundance follows a different pattern—one that starts with a seed.
A single seed, when planted, nurtured, and given space to grow, will germinate, sprout, and, with time, become anything from a delicate rose to a towering sequoia. The key? It grows in accordance with what was planted.
If you want more freedom, then it makes sense to plant the seeds of freedom in your own life.
If the real reason you want money is so that you can be free, but you spend 12 hours a day doing something you wouldn’t choose if not for the money, you’re cultivating the wrong seed.
Planting the Seeds of Freedom
Instead of postponing freedom for a later date, start small. Even 10 minutes a day of true freedom can be the seed from which everything else grows.
- If you crave freedom of time, dedicate at least one moment daily to doing something that is purely for you—no justification needed.
- If you desire freedom from obligation, practice saying no at least once a day to something that does not align with what you truly want.
My Own Path to Freedom
Over the past year, I’ve spent most of my time doing things that light me up:
- Writing music
- DJing
- Connecting with animals and nature
- Helping high-level leaders evolve as humans and solve their most interesting strategic challenges
- And most importantly, spending quality time at home as a new dad, cherishing time with my wife and daughter.
This is work I would do for free. And yet, paradoxically, it has led to financial sustainability and a deeply fulfilling life.
Because I planted the right seeds.
Freedom Grows Like a Forest
The mistake many leaders make is believing they must work their way into freedom. But freedom is not a distant reward—it’s a practice.
Each time you choose freedom in a small way, you strengthen the root system for more of it to grow.
So, plant the right seeds. Water them daily. And sit back as your life becomes a mighty forest that nourishes your soul.
